SUMMARY:Music of Faith and Hope from Uganda and Haiti
DESCRIPTION:Music of Faith and Hope from Uganda and Haiti is a concert of string quartet concert by Haitian and Ugandan composers. \n\nThe program includes Rudy Perrault‘s Exodus String Quartet. His writing is heavily influenced by the culture of his native Haiti\, and he portrays through music the story of being forced to leave Haiti under circumstances less fortunate than his own. The work is dedicated to people around the world forced from their homelands\, especially those persecuted in their new country. The work ends on a tentative but hopeful note that the lives of the children of the work’s dedicatees will be better. \nAlso included is Justinian Tamusuza’s On the Way of the Cross\, which celebrates the Uganda Martyrs. The Uganda Martyrs are the first Black African saints canonized by the Catholic Church. In the 1880s\, the vile king Mwanga II invited religious men to his court to argue the merits of their religions. When his authority became compromised because men in his court converted to Christianity\, he had them put to death. According to legend\, they were so happy to be spiritually freed by their new faith that they accepted their fates peacefully and even joyously\, so happy were they to have found this new religion. The Uganda Martyrs are widely celebrated in Uganda and through Africa to this day.\n Tamusuza‘s work extensively incorporates elements of the music of the Buganda cultural group from which he hails\, imitating its instruments and using its rhythms\, scales\, and melodies.\nSabrina Jean Louis is a 21-year-old Haitian cellist who is largely self-taught as a composer. Her beautiful piece Allo Seigneur (“Hello Lord”) is a moving and personal testament of her deep Christian faith.\n\nThis program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

DESCRIPTION:Crossing Borders Music joins forces with The Mulati Ensemble to perform seldom-heard compositions\, world premiere arrangements\, and uplifting Colombian folk songs and dances. Included on the program will be a premiere performance of “Tiger” by Eustasio Rosales. Rosales\, known as Chicago’s first Hispanic composer\, was a Colombian immigrant whose works were celebrated in his life time and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His scores\, in storage and forgotten for decades\, have been recently rediscovered. The concert also includes a work by Luis Calvo\, known for his charming\, salon-style works for piano\, which he wrote from confinement in a leper colony. Other composers represented include Carlos Posada Amador\, Guillermo Uribe Holguin\, and Andres Posada.\nThe concert is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:New Voices: Celebrating Young American Indian Musicians
DESCRIPTION:Crossing Borders Music joins Shki Bmaadzi to showcase the musical accomplishments of young American Indian composers\, performers\, and dancers in the first-ever event of its kind. The concert will include performances of string quartets by Chickasaw composers Cruise Berry and Katie Barrick\, as well as music and dancing in the style used in inter-tribal powwows performed by Shki Bmaadzi and featuring members of the Chi Nations Youth Council\, including original choreography to selected music for string quartet. The performance will take place at the brand new location of Chicago’s American Indian Center\, the oldest organization of its kind in the country.\nThis program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. \nString Quartets \nThe program will feature Barrick’s Not For the Faint of Heart\, Berry’s Fantasia\, and a regional premiere of Berry’s String Quartet #3\, Donne XIV. Donne XIV is inspired by John Donne’s Holy Sonnet #14\, and by the documentary “This May Be the Last Time” about the mysterious disappearance of Pete Harjo in 1962\, and the members of his Seminole and Muskogee communities who sung the hymns of hope and faith as they searched for him. Berrry’s work uses a melody based on a Muskogee-Creek hymn that was orally passed along to the composer by a man featured in the documentary – a melody Berry considers a “connection to the secular and sacred.” Efforts to preserve these undocumented hymns have begun only in the past several years. \nThe program will also include Flare Up! by Michael-Thomas Foumai\, a composer of Samoan heritage. The breathlessly energetic work was inspired by Samoan fire knife dancing. \nThe quartets will be performed by Roy Meyer and Maya Shiraishi\, violins\, William McLellan\, viola\, and Tom Clowes\, cello. \nShki Bmaadzi \nAlso featured will be Shki Bmaadzi (“New Beginnings” in Ojibwe)\, a native youth drum and dance ensemble affiliated with the Chi Nations Youth Council. Led by Weylin Webster\, Shki Bmaadzi has performed at Soldier Field\, around the Midwest\, in Arizona\, and in Utah\, where it won a drumming contest. Shki Bmaadzi specializes in the music in the style performed at inter-tribal powwows\, including the vocal performance of “vocables” – syllables without any literal meaning\, originally used so that American Indians of different tribes could communicate solidarity without a shared language. Skhi Bmaadzi will perform original choreography to selected music for string quartet. \nAbout the Composers \nBerry and Barrick were participants in the Chickasaw Summer Arts Academy\, where they studied music composition with Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate. Their works were recorded on “Oshtali: Music for String Quartet”and “Tobachi: Chickasaw Nation Young Composers Recording Project” with the Linden Quartet. Berry recently finished his studies in Music Composition at Oklahoma City University. Barrick is currently Education Coordinator at the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. \nA note on terminology: We use “American Indian” rather than “Native American” to reflect the preferences of a majoirty of American Indians as expressed in US census data and a US Department of Labor survey.

DESCRIPTION:Crossing Borders Music will perform two short pieces for piano\, violin\, and cello at the 27th Annual Conference of the Association of the Friends of Persian Culture! The pieces are the First Movement (“Dashti”) of Nikan Milani’s Piano Trio\, and “Persian Dreams” by Safa Shahidi.\nNikan Milani’s piano trio tells through music the powerful\, resilient story of the BIHE – Bahá’í Institute for Higher Education. The BIHE was created because Bahá’ís in Iran are not allowed to enroll in higher education programs. By teaching at the BIHE\, Nikan and his fellow teachers therefore became subject to raids\, imprisonment\, and disappearance by the Iranian authorities.\nSafa Shahidi’s energetic and uplifting “Persian Dreams” blends Western instrumentation with Persian modes and melodies.\nThe works will be performed by Marianne Parker\, piano; Maya Shiraishi\, violin; and Tom Clowes\, cello.\nThis performance is open to attendees of the August 31-Sept 3 Conference of the Association of the Friends of Persian Culture. SUMMARY:Richès Dayiti: Treasures of Haitian Music for Piano and Cello
DESCRIPTION:Richès Dayiti will allow Glacier Hills and Ann Arbor residents to discover Haitian piano music\, a repertoire unknown to all but a handful of scholars for the last century. The performances’ compositions have been preserved by the Society for the Research and Diffusion of Haitian Music in Montreal\, archived by the Laboratory of World Music Research of the University of Montreal\, and prepared into performance editions by Dr. Robert Grenier of South Carolina State University. SUMMARY:Richès Dayiti: Treasures of Haitian Piano Music
DESCRIPTION:“Richès Dayiti: Treasures of Haitian Piano Music” provides an intimate look at the mostly unknown beauty of Haitian piano music\, unknown to all but a handful of scholars for the last century. The performances’ compositions have been preserved by the Société de recherche et de diffusion de la musique haïtienne (SRDMH) (Society for the Research and Diffusion of Haitian Music) in Montreal\, archived by the Laboratory of World Music Research of the Université de Montréal\, and prepared into performance editions by Dr. Robert Grenier of SC State University\, who will introduce the music with spoken remarks. Pianist Marianne Parker will perform the program\, bringing to life the fruits of decades of scholarly work. \nThe program will include the Haitian méringue-inspired Quatre Danses (Four Dances) by late 19th/early 20th century composer Ludovic Lamothe. Lamothe was known as “Black Chopin” and “The Last of the Romantics” because of his affinity for Chopin\, and for his long\, romantic-style melodies and lush harmonies. The program also shares Nocturne No. 1 by Carmen Brouard. Brouard was a 20th century piano virtuoso and modernist composer. As a young musician\, she attended the Paris Conservatoire. She dedicated her Nocturne #1 to one of her piano students. The three movements of Edmond Saintonge’s Pages Intimes (Intimate Pages) show his emotional and romantic approach to composing. The movements’ titles translate as I. Hopelessness\, II. Melancholy\, Salon Mazurka\, and III. Sentimental Talk. In his Sonate Folklorique en Sol Majeure sur les Chansons Populaires d’Haiti (Sonata on Haitian Folk Songs in G Major)\, Emile Desamours quotes popular Haitian folk song melodies and incorporates also the syncopated\, dancing rhythms of Haitian folk music. Ending the program\, François Manigat’s Souvenir de Quinze Jours au Cap Haitien (Memories of Fifteen Days in Cap Haitien) reminisces about two enchating weeks the composer spent on Haiti’s northern coastal city. \nThe performance will be given by pianist Marianne Parker. Parker is a founding member of the L+M Duo\, which performs contemporary music for percussion and piano. Previously\, she served as Principal Pianist of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago\, where she studied under Chicago Symphony Orchestra Principal Pianist Mary Sauer. DESCRIPTION:Crossing Borders Music honors refugees around the world in this performance of music written by or about refugees!\nHear the proud “Refugees Anthem” by Moutaz Arian. Be stirred by Tatev Amiryan’s “Tristesse\,” a homage to the famous Armenian musician Komitas. The piece expresses Komitas’ pain and sorrow as the Armenian Genocide forced him from his home and caused him to suffer a mental breakdown as he lived in exile for the rest of his life. Hear Ruth Schonthal’s String Quartet “In Memoriam Holocaust.” As an American Holocaust refugee\, Schonthal spent much of her life avoiding writing music about the Holocaust so as not to trivialize it. Late in her life\, she finally decided to write this piece to encourage its remembrance and memorialize its victims. Mahdis Kashani’s “And the Moses Drowned” is written in memory of Aylan Kurdi and all children who have died in war. Mahdis says\, “These children are innocent like Moses\, but without any savior.” Zvonimir Nagy’s exquisite “Fall\, Leaves\, Fall” and Miguel del Aguila’s exciting Presto II round out an intensely stirring program.\nThis program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.\nThis project is partially supported by a grant from the City of ChicagoDepartment of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

Officially barred from attending college or university because of their religion\, Iranian Bahá’ís and their Muslim supporters founded the Bahá’í Institute for Higher Education\, a grassroots school that holds classes in living rooms and basements. At this school\, in the face of government raids and faculty imprisonment and disappearance\, these brave musicians learned and taught music. SUMMARY:Honoring Refugee Composers
DESCRIPTION:Crossing Borders Music honors refugees around the world in this performance of music written by or about refugees! The program includes the “Refugees Anthem” by the composer Arian\, who is a Syrian refugee currently living in China. Also presented will be string quartet arrangements of the beautiful Al Ayloughs and Shogher Jan by the famous Armenian composer Komitas\, followed by Armenian composer Tatev Amiryan’s “Tristesse\,” a homage to Komitas. In Amiryan’s piece she expresses Komitas’ pain and sorrow as the Armenian Genocide forced him from his home and caused him to suffer a mental breakdown as he lived in exile for the rest of his life. The program will also Ruth Schonthal’s String Quartet “In Memoriam Holocaust.” As an American Holocaust refugee\, Schonthal spent much of her life avoiding writing music about the Holocaust so as not to trivialize it. Late in her life\, she finally decided to write this piece to encourage its remembrance and memorialize its victims. Zvonimir Nagy’s exquisite “Fall\, Leaves\, Fall” and Miguel del Aguila’s exciting Presto II round out an intensely stirring program.\nThis program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

DESCRIPTION:Explore Peru’s rich history and culture through its songs\, dances\, and chamber music in this concert for string quartet and voice! Hear the yearning of oppressed miners seeking freedom as Peruvian tenor Luis Galvez sings the original version of “El condor pasa” by Daniel Alomía Robles. Learn how Chabuca Granda combined European\, Andean\, and – controversially – African influences and hear her vals criollo\, or “Creole waltz\,” titled “La flor de la canela” (“The Cinnamon Flower”)\, a beautiful and timeless classic. Hear the longing of Peruvians abroad yearning for their homeland in César Míro’s “Todos vuelven” “Everybody Returns”). Learn about the Afro-Peruvian song and dance Hatajo de Negritos\, a Christian spiritual tradition that sustained spirits and fostered hope and resistance to slavery.
