SUMMARY:Música Colombiana with special guest The Mulati Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:The program features compositions and folk song arrangements by Colombian composers\, including the song “A Mother to Her Son” by early-20th century composer Eustasio Rosales\, which was recently unearthed by The Mulati Ensemble in the composer’s great-grandson’s basement. Rosales came to Chicago from Colombia and is thought to be Chicago’s first Hispanic composer. While in his lifetime his music was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, after his death\, his non-musical heirs put his music in storage\, where it has remained until 2015\, when Rosales’ opera was given its posthumous world premiere. In addition to other works by early 20th century composer Luis Calvo\, the program will feature world premiere performances of works by contemporary Colombian composers Andrés Posada\, Juan David Osorio\, and Jose Revelo. The program will also feature world premiere performances of folk song arrangements by Diego Alejandro Osorio and Juan David Osorio which will highlight the richness of Colombia’s regional folk music and dance traditions. \nThis program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

SUMMARY:The Third Annual CELEBRATING RESILIENCE: Music From the Unvanquished Bahá'í University of Iran
DESCRIPTION:The third annual “Celebrating Resilience: Music from the Unvanquished Bahá’í University of Iran” features music composed or performed by former music teachers and students who risked their safety to attend the Bahá’í Institute for Higher Education. This grassroots school was created because the Iranian government doesn’t allows Bahá’ís in Iran to enter official colleges or universities – part of a pattern of vicious government discrimination against Iranian Bahá’ís. In response\, these brave musicians have created music that celebrates their faith and perseverance. Celebrate their journey with us and enjoy their beautiful music in a beautiful venue.\nThis program will include the world premiere performance of “Hope\,” a piano trio by Badie Khaleghian.\nThe event marks the debut of a 6-month residency of Crossing Borders Music at the Chicago Cultural Center. This concert will take place in Preston Bradley Hall \nThis program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
