Música Colombiana with special guest The Mulati Ensemble
Sunday, February 28, 2016 at 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
free and open to the publicThe program features compositions and folk song arrangements by Colombian composers, including the song “A Mother to Her Son” by early-20th century composer Eustasio Rosales, which was recently unearthed by The Mulati Ensemble in the composer’s great-grandson’s basement. Rosales came to Chicago from Colombia and is thought to be Chicago’s first Hispanic composer. While in his lifetime his music was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, after his death, his non-musical heirs put his music in storage, where it has remained until 2015, when Rosales’ opera was given its posthumous world premiere. In addition to other works by early 20th century composer Luis Calvo, the program will feature world premiere performances of works by contemporary Colombian composers Andrés Posada, Juan David Osorio, and Jose Revelo. The program will also feature world premiere performances of folk song arrangements by Diego Alejandro Osorio and Juan David Osorio which will highlight the richness of Colombia’s regional folk music and dance traditions.
This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
