Get paid to write music!
With support from the Illinois Arts Council, Crossing Borders Music will hire 4 teenage musicians for a summer composing program. If selected, you will receive free weekly 45-minute music composition lessons with composer/mentor Jessica T. Carter. You will be expected to work independently 4 hours a week learning how to write and writing your piece of music for the string players in the Crossing Borders Music string quartet. The program starts with an orientation session the afternoon of Monday, June 2 and lasts for ten weeks, through August 9. August 10-23 will be “make-up weeks.” In July, we’ll have a reading session with the Crossing Borders Music String Quartet so you can hear your music on real instruments, share ideas, and receive feedback. Then Crossing Borders Music will perform your music in a live performance in early September.
If selected, you will be paid $18/hour (about $855 for the summer, minus taxes). You will own the music you create, and Crossing Borders Music will be able to share it.
The orientation session will take place in-person on the West Side. After that, most lessons will happen over Zoom.
We’re looking for youth who:
– are passionate about music
– are responsible and self-motivated
– can read music
– live in Illinois
– are at least 14 years old (14+15-year-olds must receive an employment certificate)
